IMS Celebrates the Inaugural Cohort of Maguire Middle School Scholars

By IMS Staff

The weather is getting warmer; the days are getting longer, and winter coats are securely packed away.  While summer is fast approaching and the school year is coming to a close, one group of students already has their sights set on the future, and they have big plans for the summer and their academic endeavors ahead.  Meet the inaugural cohort of the Maguire Middle School Scholars Program – a newly formed initiative developed in conjunction with and fully funded by the Maguire Foundation.

The program, which is new for the 2015-2016 school year, recognizes and provides academic and financial support to seventy-five rising sixth graders selected from across all fifteen IMS schools. In February of this year, students maintaining a GPA of 85 or higher and actively participating in at least one extracurricular or community activity were invited to apply for the program by submitting a written application and a personal essay answering the question “What will being a Maguire Scholar mean to me?” Students selected as Scholars were chosen due to their exceptional academic performance as well as their commitment to service and desire to grow and learn all year long.

Dozens of happy and excited families came together to recognize their students’ accomplishments during a reception to welcome them into the program.  Families heard from Maguire Foundation Executive Amy Holdsman and Megan Maguire Nicoletti who urged students to “Believe what you are, and become what you believe.”  All of the students received copies of the book Just Show Up Every Day, by founder Jim Maguire, to inspire them on their education journey. The soon-to-be sixth graders left the welcome reception eager to get started and excited to learn.

Believe what you are, and become what you believe

“Since (my daughter) received the Maguire Scholarship nomination, it has helped her prepare more education-wise — she reads more, studies more, and is more focused, “ explained proud parent Toma Okeme whose daughter Emma attends St. Cyril of Alexandria in Lansdowne. “It will help her education a great deal.”

All Maguire Middle School Scholars are awarded $2,000 annual scholarships and encouraged to participate in summer enrichment programs and exclusive Scholar events to further hone their academic skills and inspire them to continue striving for success.  With year-round learning opportunities and the support of their peers in the program, Scholars will have the chance to grow and develop and build a strong foundation for success, not only in their middle school academic careers, but as they continue on to high school and beyond.
